36th America’s Cup Infrastructure

Project Overview

The 36th America’s Cup regatta is to be held in Auckland in 2021. The event will be held in and around Freemans Bay, on the Auckland Waterfront. Construction of over $200 million of infrastructure, required to facilitate hosting of the regatta is underway, including marine based works associated with Hobson Wharf, Halsey Wharf, and Wynyard Wharf, along with land-based works on Wynyard Point. The works also include provision of services to each of the proposed syndicate bases. The works are being delivered by the Wynyard Edge Alliance, including non-owner participants McConnell Dowell, Downer, Beca, and Tonkin and Taylor. Given the budget and time constraints, the Alliance model has proven to be a great success with the ability to use innovative design and construction methods.

MPS was retained by Auckland Council in the role of Asset Owner Representative on the Wynyard Edge Alliance, working with the designers and constructors, such that the needs of Auckland Council and Panuku Development Auckland (as asset owners and operators) were clearly articulated and communicated. The role also supported and guided the Alliance participants in their dealings with Asset Owners and End Users to progress the achievement of the project objectives.

By representing the asset owner MPS was able to support the delivery of the project within the agreed budgets and programme. Another key role has been leading the asset handover processes and ensuring good quality documentation is provided in the form of construction records and operation manuals.
