Takapuna Beach Water Quality Improvement Project

Project Overview

Auckland Council’s Safeswim website provides water quality ratings to inform the public about the health risks associated with contact recreation at beaches across the Auckland Region. The Safeswim programme utilises predictive models to forecast water quality using the faecal indicator bacteria (FIB) Enterococci against the Ministry of the Environment (MfE) guidelines.

During the summer of 2017/18, the reported Safeswim beach ratings for Takapuna Beach indicated faecal contamination water quality issues, with a high number of unacceptable red alerts or beach water quality failures. The number and frequency of Safeswim red alert ratings was limiting the high use of the beach and impacting negatively on beach use, organised public contact sporting events and the ecological and amenity values of this environment.

In response to the number of Safeswim poor water quality red alerts, Auckland Council appointed MPS to project manage the Takapuna Beach Water Quality Improvement Project. The project reviewed the Safeswim results, sampling work undertaken, investigated potential sources of faecal contamination and assessed options to deliver optimum water quality improvements at Takapuna Beach. In addition, MPS provided specialist technical expertise and oversight to the project.
